Georgies Lowfire Clays (Cone 06-1)

Lowfire clays, also called earthenware clays, are rarely taken to higher temperatures than cone 04 (about 1940 Fahrenheit). These sample pictures show the clay colors after oxidation firing in an electric kiln. They're easy to work with, easy to fire, and offer the widest range of glaze color possibilities for decoration. Lowfire clays must be glazed with foodsafe glazes, and the glazes fired to their proper maturity, to make foodsafe ware.

CC537 • Piepenburg Raku

Oxidation at cone 06.

By permission, we mix Robert Piepenburg's Raku Clay formula. This clay utilizes kyanite as a grog and filler. Kyanite expands during the firing, knitting the clay together with a network of needle-like crystals, enabling you to throw and construct larger forms with fewer losses to thermal shock. Shrinks 8% in firing.

CC549 • Orange Blush

Oxidation at cone 06.

NOT your typical lowfire terra cotta! Because it's not based on Red Art like most lowfire reds, you have a body with a bit of natural tooth. An incredibly well-behaved plastic body that has real presence on the wheel. Color is more orange than red, favoring a traditional terra cotta look. Leadfree glazes give a craze-free fit at cone 05. Shrinks 8% in firing.
