Freight: The Hidden Killer Cost
![]() |
Georgies' shopping cart program interfaces with UPS, Fedex and the US Post Office to give quick estimates of freight charges on orders under 150 pounds. These freight estimates may change when we process your order. Our website does not charge your credit card in real-time, when you place your order. We charge your card at our physical store after filling your order and packing it for shipment. Please make sure to provide us with a phone number and email address where we can reach you. |
For orders over 150 pounds, we work with several nationwide carriers to get the best possible rates for your shipment. Even with the best possible rates, freight costs may drive the cost of your order to double, triple, or higher. Freight costs are determined by individual freight companies, based on a combination of weight and distance, subject to possible service area limitations and general economic conditions like fuel costs. We have no control over freight rates.
Generally speaking, as the total weight of your order goes up, the freight cost per pound goes down. To get the best return for your freight dollar, you might consider combining your clay order with orders from other artists in your area. Several orders shipped together, with a total weight of 1000 pounds, will receive a lower per pound freight rate than a single order of 250 pounds. You might also consider ordering glazes, supplies or equipment to ship with your clay, again pushing the total weight up and the rate down. We do not offer free-freight or reduced-freight purchase programs at this time. All our long-haul freight orders originate in Portland, Oregon. Here are some examples of possible freight rates from Portland to major destinations:

The long-haul freight rates incorporated in our shopping cart are only ballpark estimates, intended to give you an idea of what the possible freight charges may be. We will use our connections and relationships with our freight carriers to get the best rates and any available discounts for your order. It will generally be your responsibility, as the person or company receiving the shipment, to unload the freight from the back of the truck. Special services, such as delivery to a residential address or delivery in a truck with a hydraulic liftgate, usually carries additional freight charges.
If you try our products and like them, we will be happy to work with you. We strive constantly to make the best, most consistent clay available on the market. Our customers' loyalty to our products even when they move out of state indicates that at least some of our efforts are paying off. We will never turn your clay order away because of freight costs. However, if you live outside our region (first the Pacific Northwest and then the Rocky Mountain states), we encourage you to look a little closer to home for a clay supplier, and we'd be glad to help you find one. It just makes dollars and sense.
