Page 77: Kiln Vents
Kiln manufacturers have always recommended that firing areas have adequate ventilation. Today's environmental consciousness has created more awareness of potential health hazards than ever before. Studies have shown that carbon monoxide emissions can exceed OSHA Threshold Limit Values during bisque firings in electric kilns. Formaldehyde and sulfur dioxide may also be present. Because of these concerns, kiln venting is required by building codes in most areas.
If your firing chamber is not properly vented, your work is also likely to suffer. Ceramic and glass materials contain organic compounds. The first phase of the firing process burns these compounds into gases or vapors before the changes at higher temperatures occur. These contaminants need to be removed from the kiln and replaced with fresh air. This is especially important with red, orange, brown and yellow glazes and lusters. They need oxygen for good color results.
Skutt's NEW Enviro-Vent 2
The EnviroVent-2 is a downdraft ventilation system designed to extract fumes from your electric kiln and vent them outdoors before they have a chance to enter the room. Skutt's original EnviroVent was the industry leader in this area for years. The newly redesigned EnviroVent 2 offers the same performance with additional features and benefits.

The motor now mounts on the wall, away from the body of your kiln. The motor isn't exposed to kiln heat, and also can't transmit vibration into the kiln. |
Vent 2 Kilns with 1 Motor
The more powerful motor, rated at 140 cubic feet per minute, allows you to vent two kilns of 12 cubic feet each, or 1 kiln between 12 and 24 cubic feet, on one EnviroVent-2 system.
Negative Pressure with a Spring-Loaded Seal
Because the vent is wall-mounted, it pulls air through the ductwork instead of pushing it. If the ductwork ever springs a leak, the fumes will not be pushed into the room.

As your kiln heats up, the brick expands at an uneven rate between the hot inside surface and the cooler outside surface. The result is that the kiln floor moves upward at higher temperatures. The spring-loaded air cup follows the floor, ensuring a tight seal throughout the firing. |
