79: Kiln Shelves
If
your kiln is large enough to hold more than one piece at a time, kiln shelves
and posts are must-have items. With reasonable care and using kiln wash to protect
against glaze drips, your kiln shelves can last for years of use.

Inside
Your Kiln
- Stack
shelves so that at least one kiln element is spaced between any two
kiln shelves.
- Keep
shelves one inch away from element coils and thermocouples or KilnSitters.
- Avoid
using posts taller than 10 inches if possible.
- Place
sets of witness cones on each shelf to verify that all areas of the
kiln reached the desired temperature.

- Position
posts over each other to help bear the weight of the load.
- The bottom
shelf should be on short posts so that there is at least one inch clearance
from the kiln's bottom slab.
- Choose
thicker posts if you have heavier ware.
- Three
posts give more stable footing than four.
