Stilts are used exclusively in lowfire glaze (cone 04-06) firings, when the piece is completely covered in glaze. The stilt's purpose is to hold the piece off the shelf, so the glaze does not glue the piece to the shelf when it melts. Using stilts when firing stoneware or porcelain will cause the piece to deform.
