Update:
Leaded Glazes Going Away Soon(er)
Duncan's
Goal is March 1st!
As
we reported in our last newsletter, Duncan and Mayco (among others)
are removing all lead from their glazes. Duncan has actually accelerated
their timeline! They'll be entirely "out of the lead business"
starting March 1st.
Almost
every day we hear from longtime ceramic artists concerned that their
favorite glazes, glazes that they've relied on for many years, are
suddenly being taken off the market. This can be a tough and scary
prospect, we know, but it's actually not a new idea. Duncan, Mayco,
and other glazemakers have been gradually replacing their old lead-bearing
formulas with new nontoxic products for quite some time. There were
some early differences between the old leaded glazes and the new
nontoxic formulas, but improving technology and continuing research
has resolved those differences. We hear nothing but good reviews
about Duncan's new "Pure Brilliance" clear glaze!
To
help you along in taking the "No-Lead Plunge," we'd like
to offer these tips that we've found in working with these glazes:
Thickness matters. Clear glazes like to be applied
thinner. If you brush on your glazes, stop at two coats. If you
dip your pieces in the glaze, the glaze should be at the consistency
of nonfat milk -- or 2% milk, at most. Dip your bisque in, and take
it out promptly with no "hang time" in the bucket.
Fire to cone 05. No-lead glazes can take a bit more
heat to fully mature, "fine out" and give you the clarity
and bright shine of the old leaded glazes.
As
part of this effort to "get the lead out," Duncan will
be introducing many new glazes in the next few weeks to replace
the old GLs, GOs, and others. Feel free to call us with any questions
you may have, and watch our website for the new colors coming soon.
