April
24th:
Glass Postcards
10:00a - Noon
FREE
|
 |
 |
|
Fusing
glass is really fun and easy. When you use frits (crushed
glass in various sizes), there's no glass cutting required!
You just get to play with color and design, plus a touch
of whimsy, for great family "craft" nights
or classroom projects. (Glass postcards
must be fired after completing your design. Firing is
not included as part of the free workshop, but
available here for a reasonable fee.)

Made
With Clay Summer '09
|
 |
|
| It's
sad but true: the glass postcard workshop on April 24th will
be the last "Fun Friday" session for a while. We're
going to give Christy a chance to catch her breath in May, and
then our "Made With Clay Summer" series will kick
off in June.
"Made
With Clay Summer" is a time when we get the opportunity
to share our expertise, knowledge, skills and favorite techniques
with you. Many (if not most!) of us are working artists, with
hands-on practical experience with clay, glazes, tools, materials,
and a whole lot more. This is a GREAT time to get answers
for many of the "how-to" questions you might have.
It's also a great opportunity to pick up new skills and try
new techniques that just might further spark your creativity.
We'll offer Made With Clay Summer workshops each Friday through
June, July and August, with one in the morning and one in
the afternoon. Each workshop will cost only $10 for two hours
of instruction and hands-on experience.
As
an added opportunity, we're also working on a two-day sculpture
workshop with renowned local artist Jim Gion. Watch
for our E-News coming in May for more details!

Stock Now: Trillium Porcelain for Cone 6 (CC552)
Finally, a really friendly porcelain at cone 6! Trillium
is a true porcelain composed of blended domestic kaolins. There's
no ball clay at all! It's easy to work with for hand and wheel work.
Fire it to cone 6 for the distinctive slightly bluish-to-grey-white
look of REAL porcelain: it's not just another white clay. Kristy
has been working with it in our classroom sudio. She says that it
does need the confident-yet-delicate touch of working with any porcelain,
but it trims very nicely in the leather-hard stage. It also dries
evenly without the cracking issues she's experienced with other
porcelains. And let's not overlook one more factor: the price is
friendly, too, compared to other porcelain clays.
IRS
Sale Runs through April 30th at Georgies
We might wish we could put the IRS up for sale -- if only it was
that easy! --- but in the meantime we'll do our best to relieve
the bite of Tax Day. Until the end of the month, we're offering
Skutt kilns and potters' wheels at special discounts. This sale
(as shown in our paper newsletter mailed out in early January) includes
the ultra-reliable Skutt KilnMaster computerized kilns and the new
Skutt wheels by Thomas Stuart.

New
from Brent: The QuickcenterSystem
Center
your clay the first time. Every time.
Do
you have students struggling with centering clay on the wheel?

painful to work on the wheel?
Or would you just like to find a way to "speed up" the
process of centering in your production work?
The
new Quickcenter System from Brent may be just what you're looking
for. Here's how it works in three easy steps:
|
|
|
|
|
Load
the Canister/Plunger with clay by pressing into wedged
clay.
|
Place
the Universal Adapter and Recessed Bat onto the wheel
head using the QuickCenter bat pins.
|
Center
the Canister/Plunger into the Recessed Bat Set, release
the clay and begin throwing.

NEW
Lowfire Glazes from Duncan
As
we all know, over the last few months Duncan and Mayco have systematically
discontinued all their glazes that included lead in the formulas.
It's been bittersweet for many of us: some of our old favorite glazes
are simply gone, while others will be updated with new nontoxic
and leadfree formulas. Over the last few weeks, we've seen some
of the new formulas starting to arrive. They look great! Some of
the new formulas don't quite *exactly* match the old colors, but
they're pretty darned close. We'd like to introduce you to the first
SEVEN NEW COLORS from Duncan.

to your order.

There
are more to come over the next few weeks, plus TEN new CR-series
crystal glazes. We'll also have the new, reformulated Jungle Gems
crystal glazes arriving from Mayco. We'll introduce you to some
of these in our next e-news, next month. In
the meantime, also be sure to check out the "Specials"
page of our website.
Stretching
Your Budget with Georgies
Make
sure to visit our homepage at www.georgies.com
to see two pages of special sale items. We have a variety of used
kilns and potters wheel available in stock. Several of
them are refurbished with new parts, and we offer those pieces with
a warranty from Georgies. If you've been wanting to buy a wheel
or kiln to expand your home studio but have hesitated at the cost,
these may be just what you've been looking for.
We're
also having a special clearance sale on discontinued
glazes from Duncan and Mayco (plus a few others). All
the lowfire glazes listed on our "Specials" page will
be at 40% off retail prices until they
are GONE. These sale prices apply only to our remaining stock on
hand of these glazes. Availability of your favorite colors may be
limited, and we can't backorder or reorder these glazes at the sale
price. We'll be posting this page this afternoon or tomorrow morning,
just as soon as we finish the final touchups
on it. Watch for it, and get these glazes while you can.

Showing in Our Gallery: Elisabeth Cook Sullivan
|
|
| Elisabeth
Cook Sullivan lives here in Portland, where she divides her
time between many interests. Educated as a theoretical mathematician,
she has enjoyed a career in computer security. Even through
it all, however, she has always been an active artist: she's
an accomplished painter, potter and sculptor. Of late, animal
creations in stoneware and porcelain have been her passion.
Her preferred subjects are "untamed" creatures, including
African herd animals, big cats, wild horses and aquatic animals.
Her ceramic work includes free-standing and wall-mount animal
figures, plus functional pieces decorated with 2-D or 3-D animals.
Elisabeth spends a lot of time at her potter's wheel these days,
which sits on her back porch overlooking Forest Park.
