Jim Gion Teaches Portrait Sculpture

This special opportunity is our headline event of the summer, and it's a first for us! We've had a number of requests for a class like this one over the years, but we felt we had to find just the right person to lead you on this journey. Jim Gion is the one we've been waiting for! We are truly honored to host him here at Georgies.

Modeling a likeness in clay is a skill to practice as well as an art. You have to train yourself in what to look for, how to measure what you see, and how to recreate it in clay. Jim will teach his old-world method of bringing a lump of clay to life! You'll work with a live model to learn the technique of measuring and placing features on the "frame" of the clay head you'll create. Along the way, as you work with a live model, you'll begin to learn the art and skill of "seeing" your subject correctly.

The class fee for this workshop includes your instruction, clay, modeling fee, sculpture stand, and firing. The fee does not include tools or lunch. There are several fast food restaurants close by, or bring your lunch. (Microwave oven and refrigerator are available.) A supply list for tools and materials to bring will be mailed to you when you sign up.

UPDATE: We're getting calls about enrolling for this class and it may fill up fast. We currently have 9 seats available out of 12 total, but those three were claimed in about two hours today. If you'd like to attend this workshop, you may want to call soonerthan later!

It's a Made-With-Clay Summer!

We have lots of fun in store for you on Fridays in July and August! These hands-on workshops are designed to answer your questions about products and techniques, followed by the practical experience of doing it yourself. Fees include the workshop instruction, hands-on experience, and all the materials you will use. The fee does not include firing, but we offer firing at a reasonable cost if you don't have access to a kiln. For details on individual classes, please visit our main CLASSES page at www.georgies.com. PLEASE NOTE: Available seat counts are current as of noon on Thursday, June 25th, but the availability will change with further enrollments.

Amaco Seeks Art Submissions

We received this message from Amaco last Friday, and thought we'd pass it along! If you use Amaco glazes, this could be an opportunity for you.

"We are seeking artwork for publication to showcase AMACO glazes. There is no cash compensation when artwork is chosen. Credit will be given to the artist. This is a chance to be seen by your peers and by collectors as well. The single largest source of traffic to our website is from Google Images, because people are looking online for photos of ceramic art each day.

There are a number of avenues for sending us your art, or for sending in your students work (of all ages or grade levels). The easiest way is to send images to artsubmissions@amaco.com with your name and profession, plus your school, university or hometown. ONLY artwork which is submitted with the names of specific Amaco glazes will be published.

When you send in artwork, you automatically grant us permission to publish your artwork on www.amaco.com, in our Amaco and Brent catalogs, or on our Amaco Facebook page (with your name given as credit). You may also add your designation or school such as 'Professional Potter,' 'Educator', etc so proper acknowledgement is given. Testimonials or helpful tips about our glazes may be quoted unless you specify 'No Quotes.' "

If interested, you can send questions or submissions to artsubmissions@amaco.com.

Now Showing in Our Gallery: Beyond Jordan

Beyond Jordan creates "legacy" porcelain tableware locally crafted by hand and inspired by the fresh Oregon wilderness found just beyond their studio's doorsteps. Beyond Jordan is committed to creating a lasting legacy of artwork in their awareness of sustaining the environment, using energy wisely, and recycling everything they can.

These pieces are molded directly from seashells harvested in the mid-20th century off the Oregon Coast and from fresh produce grown locally in the Willamette Valley. Each design begins with the natural piece itself, which receives an improvement, an accent, or an amplification of its own features. The pieces shown at Georgies are not available for sale, but we'd be happy to direct you to retail outlets where you can purchase them.
