Crossover Plates for 2009

Because we introduced so many new glazes at once, this year we decided to try something different in testing for cool interactions. It would have taken months for our glaze testers to work their way thru the hundreds of possibilities, one tile and two colors at a time. Instead, we found a way to test in batches of 4 or 5 at a time. Each test plate would show all the interactions possible. If something looked interesting, we could go back for a detailed test later.

For these test plates, first we laid out a grid of wax resist lines across the plate, both horizontally and vertically. (The numbers were also written with wax resist at this stage.) Next we applied the two "under" coats in horizontal stripes, from left to right. We then applied the one "over" coat in vertical stripes, from top to bottom. Making your own crossover plates also gives you a great way to test the specific glazes that you work with!
