Basic
Kiln Repair
Is Your Kiln Working Right?
Electric kilns with manual controls were little more than giant-sized
toasters, but computerized kilns are high-performance machines. The
computer controllers demand exact temperatures, specific durations,
and precisely controlled heating and cooling curves for optimal firing
results. To get peak performance, you have to keep your kiln in peak
operating condition. This page lists the parts most commonly needed
for maintenance or repair of Skutt's KilnMaster computerized kilns.
We also have parts to Skutt glass kilns! If you don't see the parts
you need for your kiln, call us. These are just a few of the parts
available from Georgies, and we can quickly get the parts we don't
have in stock. We can help find parts for other brands and styles
of kilns, too.

Thermocouples
A thermocouple reads the temperature inside the kiln, which tells
the computer what to do next. The life of your thermocouple may
vary, depending on how often you fire and to what temperature. When
the thermocouple stops sending the temperature reading back to the
computer, a FAIL message appears on the display. You must replace
the thermocouple before the kiln will work again. |

Elements
& Relays
Kiln elements wear down a little with each firing, like tires
on a car with each mile driven. If the elements can't deliver
heat as required by the computer, the kiln can't achieve the optimal
rate of temperature increase and it shuts down. Relays, which
control the flow of power between sections of the kiln, should
also be replaced when you install full sets of elements. Worn
relays may stay open constantly, allowing sections of the kiln
to function at constant "high" settings -- or never
shut off.
|
|
|
Kiln
element prices in the tables below are for EACH element. When
the table shows "2 in kiln," that section of the kiln
needs TWO elements at that cost: 2 @ $38 = $76 to replace the
elements for that section of your kiln. When you have to replace
an element, we recommend replacing all the elements in that section
of your kiln at the same time. You might even consider replacing
all your kiln elements at the same time: if one is worn to the
point of being nonfunctional, others may not be far behind.
All Skutt elements wrap twice in the body of the kiln. They come
with connectors and pins. Please specify which voltages and
power phase ratings your kiln needs when ordering elements.
We stock only Skutt kiln elements. Elements for other kilns may
be available from their respective manufacturers by prepaid special
order only.

|
KS0290 • Sairset Kiln Cement
For repair of kiln lids and bottom slabs. |
|
KS0291 • Kiln Patch
For small repairs and filling cracks in firebricks. |

|
| We're happy to also offer ITC kiln coating products at Georgies. ITC products repair and extend the life of all kiln interiors made of insulating fire brick, hard brick or fiber blanket. These materials are easily applied (best by spraying, which does require respiratory protection) in a matter of hours and yield outstanding results in greater firing efficiency, lowered fuel and energy costs, and lowered firing time. We stock the ITC100HT coating, and other products are available by special order. Please call or email us for availability and current pricing. |
|
APK23 • Soft Fire Brick
Soft rectangular bricks, easily cut or shaped for many uses. (Call us for speclally shaped kiln replacement bricks.) |
