Kiln Shelves
Shelves are only shipped within the state of Oregon. Due to the fragile nature and
packaging requirements, we recommend that you contact "The Ceramic Shop" at
888-457-4236 to have shelves shipped to your location.
If Your kiln is large enough to hold more than one piece at a time, kiln shelves and posts are must-have items. With reasonable care and using kiln wash to protect against glaze drips, your kiln shelves can last for years of use.
- Position posts directly over each other to help bear the weight of the load without the weight of the post adding that much more. (Click POSTS to go to the page to shop.)
- The bottom shelf should be on short posts (1" high) so that there is at least one inch clearance from the kiln's bottom slab. This allows heat to circulate under the bottom shelf too, preventing the formation of a cold spot during firing.
- Choose thicker posts if you have heavier pieces to fire.
- Three posts give more stable footing than four.
Inside Your Kiln

- Stack shelves so that at least one kiln element is spaced between any two kiln shelves.
- Keep shelves one inch away from element coils and thermocouples or KilnSitters.
- Avoid using posts taller than 10 inches if possible.
- Place sets of witness cones on each shelf to verify that all areas of the kiln reached the desired temperature.

You should use witness cones in computerized kilns, too, to verify that the kiln actually reached the target temperature in the computer programming. The witness cones will also help you find any cold spots in your kiln.
Kiln shelves are not returnable. If you have an problem with your kiln shelf, please contact us within 2 business days so we can help resolve the issue.
Hollow-Core Shelves
Full shelves for the large kilns have always been too heavy to use -- until now. The hollow cores of these shelves reduce their weight by nearly half. Full and Half round fit the Skutt KM818, KM1027, and KM1227 kilns. Contact us regarding availability for FULL shelves that fit 1027 and 1227 size kilns. Half shelves are usually in stock, but it's always good to call first.

This Silicon Carbide Rubbing Brick is 6” x 4” x 1” and has a large 20 grit surface for removing glaze drips from kiln washed shelves. Removes and levels off thick kiln wash. The brick is attached to a handle for easy use. |
