Overglazes
The term "overglaze" applies to any color product intended to be applied on top of a fired glaze surface and then fired again. When most people say "overglaze", they mean the metallic colors (most commonly gold or silver) or lusters (mother-of-pearl) used for accents and highlights. Ventilation is very important when applying and firing overglazes because the liquid forms may contain toxic solvents. Fumes arising from the kiln, however, may be offensive but are not toxic.
Overglazes can be used on surfaces that come into contact with food or drink. When washing overglazed ware, you should be careful to avoid hard scrubbing. You could scrape the thin metallic layer right off the ware. Overglazed pieces can be washed in a dishwasher, but the overglaze will eventually wear off. You should generally treat pieces with overglazes like fine china, and exercise the same care in handling and cleaning.
