Minerals & Pigments: S

Georgies offers a wide variety of raw materials for clays, glazes and other uses. If you don't find the materials you need, please contact us. We may be able to get it for you OR suggest suitable replacements. The Occupational Health & Safety Administration devised this color-coded numerical ratings system to quickly and easily summarize the levels of risk through various means of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. Safety Data Sheets contain more detailed information about any risks posed by chemicals or raw materials, along with handling, cleanup and first aid instructions. Georgies maintains a library of SDS forms for the materials we sell. To request copies, please contact us by phone, fax or email.

CH777
Sand F-65
A very coarse sand used in clay bodies for the silica content. Adds texture and strength.

CH355
Silica #90 (200 mesh)
High melting point. Increases hardness and resistance to wear. In glazes, it decreases thermal expansion, but increases thermal expansion in clays. Raises the melting temperature in glazes. Very fine powder, finer than wheat flour.

CH405
Silica #53 (325 mesh)
High melting point. Increases hardness and resistance to wear. In glazes, it decreases thermal expansion, but increases thermal expansion in clays. Raises the melting temperature in glazes. Very fine powder, finer than wheat flour.

CH404
Silica, Amorphous
High melting point. Increases hardness and resistance to wear. In glazes, it decreases thermal expansion, but increases thermal expansion in clays. Raises the melting temperature in glazes. Very fine powder, finer than wheat flour.

CH356
Silicon Carbide FFF
a 400 grit, extra-fine silica, used in small amounts for local reduction in glazes. Encourages glaze effects like cratering and speckled reds.

CH357
Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate)
Acts as a deflocculant in reducing the water of plasticity in slip bodies. Increases workability and strength and reduces shrinkage.

CH359
Sodium Silicate
Sodium silicate is used as a major deflocculant in preparing liquid slip. It can also be used as an adhesive (ie, for securing insulation to the side of a raku kiln). Also known as "Waterglass."

CH646
Spodumene, Laguna Blend
A source of lithia and a flux which helps develop copper-blue tones. Replaces feldspar, reducing vitrification, temperature and shrinkage. Used in clay bodies to reduce thermal expansion. This is a blend from Laguna that MUST BE TESTED before using. We do not guarantee results from using this product.

CH407
Strontium Carbonate (Fine)
Recommended as a substitute for barium carbonate, but we also recommend testing it first for that use. Pat Horsley finds that 75% of the amount of barium called for is ample. Also often causes color loss. Try blending strontium and barium for a beautiful, unexpected glaze.
